On September 29, PM and I will celebrate four months in Morningwood Manor—four months that has been dominated by unpacking, finding, losing only to find it again, delays, excuses, the occasional surprise when we walk in to ask "was that there when we left?", minor meltdowns, candlelit dinners on the patio, flooring stowaways, cats and dogs living together, restless nights, lazy days and laughing, crying or shrugging through it all. It's had it's moments—good, bad and wonderful, but at the end of the day—PM is still the patient, loving constant that makes it all worthwhile. Where DID I get him?
On the Manor—we have left the associated parties (builder, flooring subcontractor, flooring supplier and flooring manufacturer) to fight it out over who gets to take a bath over our flooring critters. PM and I have been meeting with several exterminator companies—namely, their "wood-boring beetle" experts (who knew?) to see what needs to be done to get rid of said wood-boring critters. We were relieved to learn that an embarrassing fumigation would not be necessary, but we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will not have to have the entire two levels of flooring replaced, re-stained and re-waxed. We really don't want to endure another month of our shoes sticking to the floor while the wax dries again.
On a more positive homesteading note—Saturday saw us at
Room & Board where we filled the Drawing Room with furniture—two chairs, cocktail table and a really swell console. We're excite and I have to ask—why can't you just buy furniture the same way you buy anything else—point, buy and take it home? Why is it always like 6 weeks from point of sale til delivery date? I understand it takes some time to have the chairs covered in the beautiful celadon fabric we chose—but can't they rattle the chains holding those little Cambodian orphans to the sewing machines and make them work a little faster? Oh well, —I know you are breathlessly awaiting to see our Drawing Room. I'll snap some piccies when everything arrives later next month. We still need rugs—and we are toying with the idea of spending a few Saturdays checking out auctions and estate sales for these. I've heard you can get some incredible deals. We shall see.
Although I love our Manor, I have, of late, become aware that I am somewhat disappointed that it's not even a teensy bit haunted. Le sigh.
Seems like our temperate September weekends are dwindling down to the last remaining few before the autumnal chill will require a sweater and some heavily spiced spiked Apple cider for those evenings on the patio. This past weekend we threw some steaks on the grill, cracked open a bottle of red and spent a most pleasant evening dining al fresco.
And speaking of al fresco—we are heading to the mountains this weekend for a little camping with some friends. Been too long I tell you. Should be interesting to see how PM does in the wilds of North GA. How long should I wait before I tell him that there are restrooms?
